The Occidental Community Farmers' Market
There’s something undeniably special about a farmers market: the colors, the essence, the community spirit. The Occidental Community Farmers' Market captures all of it in a way that feels uniquely West County. Like so many markets in Sonoma County, it’s more than a place to pick up produce. It’s a time of much needed gathering, a weekly celebration of food, art, music, and family. It’s the heartbeat of the town.
We first crossed paths with Mau, the market’s manager, back in March during our performance at the Speakteasy event at Two Trees Tea House. That serendipitous meeting inspired us to visit the market for ourselves. From the moment we arrived in Occidental, we could feel the buzz. The town’s charming Main Street was alive with energy, transformed into a vibrant tapestry of local life.
The air was filled with the earthy scent of just-picked vegetables, sweet floral notes drifting from fresh cut bouquets, and the mouthwatering aromas of sizzling street food. Every corner offered something fresh: people reconnecting, and farmers proudly displaying their harvest.
As we arrived, we had the privilege of witnessing the Sonoma County Pomo Dancers bless the market with a sacred dance. It was a moving tribute to their ancestors and a celebration of their enduring presence. The performance served as a powerful reminder of the deep cultural roots of this land.
I couldn’t resist sampling the Corazón Honey from Crazy Honey, infused with hibiscus, lime, and ginger. It was delicious and known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Miles, always on the hunt for heat, gravitated toward Brooke’s Backyard Hot Sauce, handcrafted just down the road in Monte Rio. The flowers from Fledgling Farm were bursting with color, and the produce from Singing Frogs (I love the name!) and Ponce Farms were a feast for the eyes and the table.
What I especially love about markets like this is meeting the artisans behind their crafts. Tarashea creates stunning jewelry from recycled guitar strings. Each piece was intricate and meaningful, a perfect gift with a story.
We were also delighted to find Two Trees Tea House offering Gongfu Cha tastings beneath the shade of the majestic trees in front of their shop. It felt magical, like stepping into a serene pocket of the world. And for those looking to mark the occasion more permanently, tattoo artists Idexa Stern and Sour Trout Ink were offering produce-inspired flash tattoos. It was a creative nod to market culture.
Amidst the market are local staples like Bernie Thy Barber (where Miles goes!) and Cypress Gallery and Bazaar. Even more reason to return for a visit outside of the market.
To experience the Occidental Community Farmers' Market is to feel its rhythm. We left filled with gratitude and inspiration. These markets are more than just events. They are vital threads in the fabric of our community. They support local farms, celebrate sustainable practices, and offer access to seasonal, nutritious food that should be a right, not a luxury.
I encourage you to venture out to your local market, whether it’s Occidental or one of the many others happening throughout the week here in Sonoma County. The nourishment goes far beyond your basket. It feeds your soul.
The Occidental Community Farmers' Market is open Thursdays from 4 to 8 PM, May 22 through October 30. Visit their website for vendor details and ways to support them year-round.
Lovingly,
– Michelle
