A Parade of Lights in Guerneville, CA

How much do I love Christmas? A LOT! Ever since we moved to Guerneville, we had heard about the Main Street Parade of Lights. For the last two years the date always landed on a weekend when Miles or I were away running a marathon. This year we marked the date on our calendar early and made sure nothing would pull us away from experiencing the event in all its glory.

We had so many little traditions back in Chicago. The Christkindlmarket downtown. Admiring local shop windows all decked out with holiday decor. And one of my favorite memories of all time, watching the classic film White Christmas at the Music Box Theater. So we pulled out some of our Chicago-esque coats, because it was just chilly enough, and walked into the night.

Our tiny town transformed into a sea of light seekers, everyone choosing their perfect spot along Main Street. This year was extra special, with every float created in honor of the 75th anniversary of Peanuts. A record of more than 30 floats lined up at the west end of Main Street, and right away the cheers, the oohs, and the ahhs followed the first glow strolling down the road. One after another the creativity dazzled. A couple of West County Santas, hot air balloon flames, Guerneville’s own hula hoop crew, perfect Peanuts characters, all with the same mission: to bring joy and togetherness for one night. In a complicated world, it felt like a welcome pause.

Embracing neighbors and feeling that sense of belonging made me realize that we are planting roots in this beautiful and unique town we call home.

Afterward we wandered to Sonoma Nesting Company for a birthday party and a quick peek at some truly beautiful vintage pieces. With sweet new friends Genevieve and John leading the way to Rivertime Bar, I quickly learned they are karaoke superstars.

I still haven’t worked up the courage to sing karaoke, but Miles finally did after years of gentle peer pressure. I learned that you really do need a signature song ready to go. My mind went blank trying to think of what I could even sing. 1940s jazz? 90’s heartbreak tunes? My ska punk era?! I know my name will end up on that sign up list soon enough.

Hours melted away, and by the time we stepped outside Main Street was quiet once more. Surrounded by the river and the redwoods that anchor this community, I felt like we found our first holiday tradition here in Guerneville, California.

A special thanks to the Russian River Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and volunteers for putting on a marvelous event for all.

Lovingly,

– Michelle
