I grew up immersed in all things Audrey Hepburn. So, imagine my delight when I discovered that my favorite movie star once played the role of a cello student—Ariane Chavasse, a young musician at the conservatoire in Love in the Afternoon.
A romantic comedy set in Paris, the film follows Ariane, the daughter of a private detective, who finds herself entangled in the life of a millionaire playboy. For me, it was more than just a charming story. It was a moment where my love for vintage fashion, classic cinema, and the cello all collided.
The cello has been my bridge to creativity since I was eight years old. From my earliest lessons to the moment I knew I wanted to pursue it professionally, my parents were there, cheering me on at every recital, every concert.
My first cello teacher instilled in me the foundation and love that was needed to care for every detail. That dedication took me from the Arizona desert to the snowy winters of Chicago, where I studied under one of the most esteemed cello professors in the country. It was in that city that my world expanded. I met my husband, joined an incredible music community, and launched creative projects that blended music, art, and fashion.
One of my favorites? The Loneliest Monk: where the stage became our catwalk for vintage gowns, Venetian masks, and dramatic makeup. The more tulle, the better! I still cherish the dresses I wore, each holding a memory of a performance and a moment in time.
And the concert halls! To this day, Mandel Hall at the University of Chicago holds a special place in my heart. The 120-year-old interior with stained glass windows and ornate Victorian touches has long been a treasured music venue. It was there that I conducted determined, passionate students and shared the magic of music with my colleagues for over a decade. Some of the most talented people I’ve ever known.
Music has always been my thread to storytelling and to the people I meet along the way. Now that we are in Northern California, it’s another chapter of new connections, new collaborations, and new inspirations. Because in the end, art, fashion, and music will always endure.
